This auction is for a
Early 19th Century Coin Silver Tea Spoon by Joshua George Davis OR Isaac Davis. Both silversmiths operated in Boston Massachusetts during this period.
The spoon comes with a hand written note from the owner explaining the history of the item:
“This spoon belonged to Hannah Taber Holmes whose picture Mae has. She must have sent it after she married.”
It measures approximately 6 inches in length and is monogrammed on the front of the handle. In addition, the handle contains a “Sheaf of Wheat” which my research indicates is a design feature used Joshua George Davis (c1796 to 1840). While the mark on the back is similar to those I was able to locate, it is not a perfect match. Another silversmith operating in Boston at about the same time was Isaac Davis. While not a perfect match they are also very close. I am not an expert and have provided many high resolution images of the mark and design. If you have any additional info, please contact me and I will be happy to update the listing. The spoon is in excellent overall condition and remains in as found unpolished condition. The only item of note is that the handle is slightly bent near the mark. Please review the pictures and let me know if you have any questions before bidding.
