Description

ANTIQUE WELSCH PLATA PERUVIAN .900 SILVER
LARGE CREAMER & COVERED SUGAR BOWL
Available for purchase is an antique .900 solid silver creamer and sugar bowl.  The set was made by Welsch and Company, a wealthy German firm that invested in South American silver and had several high end jewelry stores in Peru.  They maintained the finest jewelry stores in Lima and several other Peruvian cities.  One could say they were the “Tiffany’s of Peru” during the early 20th century.  The set is marked “WELSCH PLATA 900” (“plata” is the Spanish word for silver).  The .900 purity mark is coin silver grade, slightly less than .925 sterling.  South American pieces made of .900 silver were most common during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s (until about 1920).  This set was likely made between 1900 and 1920.
The set includes a rather large creamer and covered sugar bowl with stylized handles and a very nice Art Nouveau style floral pattern, possibly inspired by an Inca design.  The pattern appears to have been hammered from the inside surface, an ancient technique.  The creamer stands about 5 1/8″ tall to the top of the handle and measures approximately 5 7/8″ from the end of the handle to the tip of the spout.  The sugar bowl is approximately 3 7/8″ tall (to top of lid finial) and measures 6″ wide to the ends of the handles (4 3/8″ wide not including handles).  Both pieces are marked on the underside of the base with the Welsch name and purity grade (see photos).
Please note that these pieces are solid .900 silver and NOT plated.  The set is quite heavy and weighs 673.3 grams.  At .900 purity, the set has 19.48 troy ounces of total pure silver weight.  The set is far too interesting and valuable to scrap, but there is almost $525 worth of silver in the set (based on spot value of $26.93 per troy ounce).  I purchased this set at a recent estate sale that had many fine items.
Condition of this antique Peruvian silver creamer and sugar set is EXCELLENT.  The pieces are undamaged except for a few tiny dings on the base rim.  This set was obviously well cared for and displays beautifully.  Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself.  I’m confident you’ll be very pleased with this purchase.
